The 5 Best Things to Do in Heidelberg

The perfect combination of quaint college town and historic ruins, Heidelberg is a must-do on any seasoned traveler’s bucket list. Charge your camera, pack your walking shoes, and get ready to breathe in the romance of this gorgeous city.

Here are some of the highlights you can’t miss:

The College

Heidelberg is home to the oldest college in Germany, Heidelberg University, which was founded in 1386. You’ll feel like a student too as you mingle amongst them in the local bars and restaurants they frequent. In fact, nearly 1/4 of Heidelberg residents are students!

The Old Town & Heidelberg Castle

Nestled atop the hills of Mount Königstuhl, the Heidelberg Castle ruins are home to a host of treasures. Steeped in centuries-old history dating back to 1225, learn about the royalty who once called this castle home.

Take in views of the city below from the gorgeous balconies and see if you can spot the mysterious footprint in the cement. Legend has it that a fire broke out during a party at the castle and a knight trapped on the balcony leaped to safety leaving behind his footprint in the concrete. Step in and see if you can fill his shoes!

The interior of the castle can only be accessed via guided tour, which is very reasonably priced. Once you’ve explored the castle, you can avoid a steep downhill journey back into town by taking the funicular.

The Heidelberg Tun

Walk around – and on top of – the world’s largest wine barrel! Built in 1751 by Prince Elector Karl Theodor, the Heidelberg Tun holds 58,124 gallons of wine. You can visit the Tun in the cellar of the Heidelberg Castle.

The Philosopher’s Walk

The Philosopher’s Walk is not just for budget-conscious visitors but something that should be on everyone’s itinerary. Also known as Philosophenweg, this path earned its name as Heidelberg University’s professors would often take contemplative walks or have chats with colleagues during the day. This path on the northern side of the Neckar River offers beautiful views of Old Town Heidelberg, the Heidelberg Castle, and the river itself.

Old Town

Rounding out the charm of the city are the quaint streets of the Old Town. Also known as Altstadt, this area is a beautiful place to grab a quick bite or take a walk.  From mom and pop shops to gigantic year-round Christmas shops, you’ll be in shopping heaven.
