Lucerne is a picturesque city that captures all the charm of Switzerland. At the base of the alps, this small city offers tons to see and do! If you’re visiting Bern or Zurich, this city is only a quick trip away.
On my first trip to Switzerland, we made our way to Lucerne to experience the cog railway up Mount Pilatus. It was an incredible adventure and a definite can’t-miss, but getting to explore this beautiful Swiss town was a welcome surprise afterwards!
Lucerne only has a population of about 82,000 people and feels like setting food in a fairytale. Replete with views of the Swiss Alps, this place is the embodiment of European charm!
Where is Lucerne, Switzerland?
Lucerne is a centrally located Swiss city along the banks of Lake Lucerne.
You can get to Zurich by train in about an hour and Bern in about an hour and a half, making this sweet city a perfect day-trip.
What Languages Are Spoken in Lucerne, Switzerland?
The official language is Swiss-German. However, like in most of Europe, English is widely understood so you shouldn’t have any trouble getting around.
Know Before You Go
Beginning sometime around November 2023, US citizens aged 18 – 70 years old will need to apply for an ETIAS visa-waiver. If you’re planning to travel within the Schengen area, you will need to fill out the online form and pay a $7.25 fee. Make sure to plan ahead to avoid issues when you’re traveling.
Here are some of the can’t-miss things to do in Lucerne, Switzerland:
Mount Pilatus
Impossible to miss, Mount Pilatus rises a staggering 6,982 feet above Lucerne. Ride the world’s steepest cog railway (at a 48% incline!) to the tip of the mountain and back, or take a cable car to the summit for stunning views of Switzerland.
After your 30 minute trip up the mountain, you’ll step out and be able to explore around. There’s an observation deck, restaurant, and a few walking trails.
This is a great option if you’re traveling with a larger group or older people, as you can sit back and enjoy the ride! Don’t forget to pack a jacket or layers, it can get chilly when you’re up in the clouds.
Chapel Bridge
Of the many bridges you may encounter in Lucerne, the Chapel Bridge is by far the most famous. Recognizable by its octagonal water tower, this gorgeous bridge is one of the most visited sites in Lucerne.
Built in 1365, the bridge connected old town Lucerne to the new town on the left bank. Sadly, a fire destroyed most of the bridge in 1993, but there are a few pictorial panels remaining that date back to the 17th century.
Old Town
Nestled between city hall and the Chapel Bridge, Old Town is a must-do in this city. This car-free area is perfect for aimless wandering and allowing yourself to come upon beautiful squares, historic architecture, and of course plenty of shops.
Next up: you’ll stop into one of Old Town’s cafes for an afternoon of people watching and views of the river Reuss.
Stock Up on Swiss Chocolate
You can’t visit Switzerland without sampling its famous chocolate!
Listen, I’m normally a huge chocolate fan. But when in Rome, eat chocolate as the Swiss do. There are plenty of chocolatiers dotting the banks of the Reuss, and they’re worth a stop-in. Chocolate makes the perfect pick-me-up and a great souvenir!
Grab a Bite On the River
The Reuss river is a beautiful backdrop for a midday stop for a bite to eat or a drink. There are plenty of riverside cafes to choose from with water views and great people watching.
Visit the Massive Lion Monument
This famous rock relief commemorates the Swiss Guards who were killed during the French Revolution. Just try not to feel a little emotional at the base of this incredible work of art!
Shop at Markthalle Luzern & Other Markets
Open 365 day a year, Markthalle Luzern is located in Lucerne’s railway station and offers fresh, local or regional samplings. That’s a big step up from fast food in the airport, isn’t it?
Lucern offers many other markets that vary by seasonality and location, so see what will be open during your trip!
Lucerne is a beautiful, quaint city that is a great slow-paced respite from some of the hustle and bustle that comes with travel.
Next Up: No trip to Switzerland is complete without a trip to the country’s largest city: Zurich.
